On the hunt for bats in Southborough

Livingstone's Fruit Bat If you’re driving down the street late at night and you happen to see a car parked on the side of the road with a large antenna sticking out of the window, don’t be alarmed. It’s just some folks looking for bats.

That’s right, bats. According to the Southborough Police Department, there’s a group in town collecting data for a Boston University study on bats. Reportedly the study has something to do with a disease that’s affecting the bat population.

(I have no idea if this is related to the research, but the Boston Globe did a story earlier this year on white nose syndrome that’s killing off thousands of bats across the region. It’s an interesting read if nothing else.)

No word on how long the researchers will be in town or what parts of town they’re surveying, but one My Southborough reader saw them Wednesday night on Pine Hill Road.
