Postseason update: Championship hopes dashed for girls tennis

As defending state champions, the Algonquin girls tennis team entered the season with high hopes, but their undefeated season came to an abrupt end yesterday when they lost to Longmeadow in the state semifinals by a score of 4 to 1.

After the loss, coach Julie Doyle talked to the local media:

“I’m so proud of my girls. They fought hard and they’ve had an incredible run,” said Tomahawks coach Julie Doyle, whose team finishes 19-1. “In the last three years, we’ve only lost twice, once in the state finals and once in the state semis, and in the last two years we’re 40-1.

“Longmeadow just outplayed us today. On another day, we might have been able to take this. I’m just so proud of my girls, they tried right to the bitter end.”
