It’s hard to believe August is just around the corner. If you’re looking for a way to maximize the fun during what’s left of summer, consider one of the Recreation Department’s summer playground camps. The camps run weekly through August 13, and there are still spots available, so it’s not too late to sign up.

Here’s a description of the programs available, thanks to the Rec Department:

The Kid’s Kamp at the Finn School is designed for children ages 2.9 years to entering 1st Grade. This location is ideal for children to become familiar with the school’s surroundings, make new friends and meet future classmates. The camp has a new Supervisor this year, Scott Lebrun, who is a Southborough resident himself with children this age. Scott has generated lots of enthusiasm for the camp with exciting theme weeks and many fun new activities which incorporate arts and crafts, water play, and games. Still planned for upcoming weeks are Fun in the Sun (with a visit from the DPW for Big Truck Day) and Disney Mania. Each week concludes with a visit from the ice cream truck.

The Junior Zone Camp provides activities for children entering 2nd to 6th grade and is held at the Woodward School. Tiffany Goode, the Woodward Physical Education teacher, has returned this year with a program which allows children to participate in activities of their choosing ranging from arts and crafts, sports, water play, and gym games. A huge inflatable water slide and a snow cone machine were a big hit and are planned again for an upcoming week. Archery, supervised by Frank Nellenback, a PE teacher at Woodward and Neary, is also planned for the older kids for the remaining weeks. The ice cream truck visits here every Friday too!

The CIT ( Counselor in Training Program) for older middle school children (entering 7th and 8th Grade) has been more popular than ever. This program provides a great opportunity for middle schoolers to become familiar with caring for younger children at both camps. Their assistance has been invaluable and has created great friendships with many of the campers. The CIT experience provides numerous future employment opportunities for the middle schoolers as babysitters and counselors.

Both the Kid’s Kamp and Junior Zone Summer Camp are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, with the option for an extended lunch hour until 1:00 pm. Contact the Southborough Recreation Office at 508-229-4452 for details on the availability of upcoming weeks.
