Need help choosing a brew? One Southborough resident has you covered.

Imagine this. You’re at a summer barbeque. There’s warm sun, good friends, and good eats. You pop open the lid of a nearby cooler to grab yourself a cold one only to find a collection of unfamiliar labels. Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA? Saranac Pale Ale? Founders Devil Dancer?

How to know what you’ll like? Thanks to Southborough’s John Muggeridge and friends, there’s an app for that.

The app is called Brew Gene and it’s available for the iPhone (coming soon for Android). It’s also a website (brewgene.com). Both tap into a database of more than 40,000 user-rated beers from around the world to record the beers you like and suggest others you might want to try. No more guessing.

“We just like beer,” Muggeridge recently told the Metrowest Daily News. “I don’t think we’re beer geeks. I don’t care if it has a hoppy aroma. I just want to know if I will like it.”

Now that’s an app I can get behind.
