Trees uprooted, power out in Southborough after Tropical Storm Irene

Most of Southborough remains without power this morning after Tropical Storm Irene blew through town yesterday. National Grid says it may be several days before power is fully restored.

Emergency crews spent yesterday responding to reports of trees and wires down all over town. Toppled trees blocked Cordaville, Marlboro, Sears, Woodland, and Breakneck Hill roads among others. Many residents reported flooded basements.

A peak wind gust of 41 mph was reported at the Southborough Fire Department yesterday morning. As of yesterday afternoon, more than four inches of rain had fallen.

Town offices are closed today – as are most town businesses, I suspect – because of the power outage.

Teachers in Southborough were scheduled to return to school today in advance of students returning on Wednesday. No word yet on whether the power outage will impact the first day of school. An open house for Woodward students scheduled for today has been postponed until Thursday.

I will continue to post updates to the Live Blog post that was started on Saturday, so everything stays in one place. Please go there for the latest information.
