Doing good: Southborough native organizes walk to benefit those with heart defects

[Ed note: This is the latest in the Doing Good series which features stories of Southborough residents who are doing their part to help causes they hold near and dear.]

Southborough native Kim Edgren was born with a congenital heart defect. Throughout her life she’s faced medical procedures and multiple open heart surgeries to manage her condition. On Saturday she will do her part to help the millions of others who like her have been impacted by congenital heart disease.

Edgren has organized Boston’s first annual Congenital Heart Walk. It’s part of a national fundraising effort to benefit the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) and The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF).

The family-friendly walk will take place at Boston Common, and there’s still time to register. Here are the details:

DATE: April 28, 2012
LOCATION: Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common, 139 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02108
REGISTRATION: 10:00 am
WALK STARTS @ 11:00 am

One or Two mile option on family friendly pathway around Scenic Boston Common. (One or Two loops on Perimeter Pathway). Parking is available at Zero Charles Street, Boston, this location is also accessible by MBTA Green and Red Lines.

There is no registration fee, but walkers are asked to raise at least $125 in donations. So far, participants have raised nearly $40K to help fight congenital heart defects.

If you attend the walk, plan on seeing some familiar faces. In addition to the Edgren family, 10-year-old Neary student Celia Cappello and her family will also be walking. Two years ago Celia underwent successful open heart surgery after doctors discovered a hole in her heart.

Team Celia is close to their fundraising goal of $3,000. You can help them reach it – or help any of the other participants in the walk – by making a donation on the Congenital Heart Walk – Boston Metro website.
