New fees and policies at the Transfer Station

The Board of Selectmen earlier this week signed off on a new set of rules and regulations for the Transfer Station. They left the price of a sticker alone at $175, but approved a number of other changes recommended by Department of Public Works Superintendent Karen Galligan. Here’s a rundown of what’s new.

  • The Swap Shop will close at 5:30 pm instead of at 5:45 pm.
  • The cost of a regular dump sticker is still $175 (free for senior residents). As in the past you can get a second sticker for free, but only if you get it at the same time as your first sticker. If you pick your second sticker up later, you’ll have to pay a new $25 fee ($15 for seniors). Galligan said the fee will help offset the administrative cost of issuing a second sticker after-the-fact.
  • Southborough residents with commercial vehicles can now get only one Transfer Station sticker, regardless of how many trucks are registered to their business. As in the past, the permitted vehicle may only be used to dispose of the resident’s trash, not waste from job sites or other commercial endeavors. Galligan said preventing business owners from permitting multiple trucks was a way to prevent commercial use.
  • If you need to replace your sticker, for example if you sold your car, you’ll now pay a $10 fee if the sticker is being issued to a vehicle with a different plate number. If your new car has the same plates, a new sticker is free as long as you bring in the old one. If not, you’ll pay $25.
  • Wood greater than 2-feet long or wide and/or 4-inches in diameter will no longer be accepted. Galligan said the hopper was having a difficult time with larger pieces of wood.
