Obituary: George R. Boothby, 87, longtime Southborough town employee and call firefighter

George R. Boothby, 87, of Fayville passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the devoted husband for 62 years of Phyllis (Pessini) Boothby. A longtime resident of Southborough, George worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Southborough Highway Department for 31 years and worked as a call fireman for the Southborough Fire Department for 40 years, retiring as a call lieutenant.

In addition to his wife Phyllis, he is survived by four children; Maureen Colleary and her husband James of Southborough; George Boothby Jr. and his wife Rosemary of Vermont; Christine Brock and her husband Stephen of Millbury; and Scott Boothby and his wife Marcia of Ashland; five cherished grandchildren; Tammi, Paul, Michael, Robert, and Jennifer, and one great-grandchild, Alexandra.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 9th at 10:30am in St. Matthew’s Church in Southborough with burial to follow in Rural Cemetery in Southborough. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St. in Ashland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Southborough Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund, 21 Main St., Southboro, MA 01772 or Metrowest Cancer Care Center, 99 Lincoln St., Framingham, MA 01702
