School technology advisory committee meets Thursday – new members welcome

The Northborough-Southborough School District’s Technology Advisory Committee meets again tomorrow night, and they’re inviting new members to join them. The committee is looking at three main areas of technology within the district, including network infrastructure, one-device-to-one-student initiatives, and school websites and communication.

In a message to parents, Directory of Technology Jean Tower explained what the group is doing and what help they’re looking for.

Technology Advisory Committee

The next 2 meetings of the Technology Advisory Committee have been scheduled. The dates are January 24 and March 21. We meet at Algonquin at 7 PM, and new members are welcome.

We continue to have 3 sub-committees as described below and I am asking for volunteers to chair each sub-committee in order to have a report or recommendation by May.

Infrastructure
Our goal is to conduct a network assessment, starting with data gathering to effectively document what is currently in place. The volunteer who is leading this effort is Steve Kearney. Steve is also working on a web presence for this committee to be able to share and communicate easily peer-to-peer.

One-to-one
Our goal this fall is to reach out to nearby communities that have launched 1:1 pilots, including 1:1 iPad pilots, and collect information. Data to collect includes how they garnered support, who provides the device (school or parents), how it has gone, and what they have learned. If you are willing to lead this effort, please let me know. One person coordinating the efforts will really help to move this along.

Web site and communication
Our goal is to assess our web site and make recommendations. We would especially like to have this committee run usability focus groups with parents. We would also like to train a cadre of volunteers in EdLine, our content management system, in order to provide more support to the schools. If you are willing to lead this effort, please let me know.

In addition, we would like to constitute a small group to put together a survey. Please let me know if you are willing to chair this effort and/or serve on the group.

The committee will meet on Thursday, January 24 at 7:00 pm in the Library at Algonquin Regional High School. For more information, contact the school Technology Department at 508-486-5115.
