Open discussion thread: Ask questions, share opinions

Time for another open thread. For those of you new to the blog, the open discussion thread is your place to ask questions, sound off on town issues, or share information with other readers. Here are some suggestions to get you started:

  • Ask questions about programs in town or the town itself
  • Post a note about things that you’re selling or giving away, or things that you want
  • Share notices about upcoming events (Southborough or otherwise)
  • Register your thoughts on town issues or news stories
  • Point out interesting or helpful resources

You can add comments to the thread throughout the week. Check back often to see new comments. (If you read the blog via email or RSS, you might want to check the site from time to time for new comments.)

What’s the going rate these days for teenagers as babysitters? Does the age of the kids matter? I presume the number of kids watched would. We’ve used daycare providers in the past, but are unsure of what a fair/good hourly rate is for responsible local teenage babysitters. Any input is welcome!

We pay our neighbor $10/hour with a time minimum. We have friends that pay $15/hour. A long way away from when I grew up and got $20 for the whole day.

I hate to sound like an old coot, but here goes. When I baby sat, 50 cents an hour was good money! Ok, now back to my hole in the wall.

We have younger sitters/mothers helpers for one child and their rate is $8/hour. The older sitters (high school/college ages) are $10/hour. On occasion we have hired preschool teachers, and their rate is $12/hour. We also have friends that pay much more than that (15-20/hour) for more children or agency sitters. Hope that helps!

Does the Southborough Fire Department ever offer CPR training? Maybe if there is enough interest?

Yes, the Southborough CERT/MRC has offered CPR training in the past. Try contacting them, their website is http://southboroughcertmrc.org/
