Roundup of Southborough winners for academics, volunteerism and sports

Here are some stories about residents recemtly honored through their achievements:

Eight students win town scholarships – from Community Advocate:
Residents Michael Araujo, Luke Serra, Rachael Guilford, Scott Howard, Alexa Williams, Matthew Barnes, Emily Stevenson, and Jack St. Andre were awarded scholarships from the Southborough Town Scholarship Committee this year. (read more)

American Red Cross of Eastern MA awards Southborough resident Volunteer of the Year – from press release:
Christine Tebaldi was honored by Red Cross with the 2013 Chandler Blackington award. In addition to managing activities of the mental health volunteers throughout Eastern Mass, Tebaldi served as Red Cross’ Mental Health Chief during the response to the Boston Marathon. She continues to work many house providing mental health coordination to the injured families and representing the Red Cross on many community meetings and collaborations. (read more)

Southborough Girl Scouts earn Gold Pin Awards – from the Villager:
When I attended Southborough’s Girl Scouts Bridging Ceremony in May, I was impressed by Emily Van Laarhoven and Ann LoVerso. At the ceremony the high school seniors shared the work that went into earning their Gold Pins. Now the Villager has reported that their pins were awarded on June 19th.

Van Laarhoven worked to support special needs families. She ran a training program for volunteers to learn the skills necessary to become babysitters for special needs children. This created a pool of available sitters at a reasonable rate.

Laverso capitalized on her passion for the Circus Arts to address the issue of childhood obesity. She created a fun elementary school exercise and conditioning program. She held a workshop for 4th and 5th graders to share activities and discuss healthy habits. (read more)

Southborough Youth Baseball repeats 495 Baseball Championship win – from press release:
14 year old SYB players faced off against Marlboro Orange on Friday June 21st. For the 2nd year straight, they were victorious in the 495 Championship. (read more)
