It’s tournament season in high school sports. Here’s an update on where Algonquin Regional High School’s varsity teams stand.

Last week, I asked you to stay tuned for news on Girls Rugby’s performance on May 24th. That afternoon girls played a jamboree game, the semi-finals and ultimately the finals.  They earned their 4th running state championship!

This afternoon, 7th seed ARHS Baseball will hope a home field advantage helps them in the quarter finals. In the first round, the team bested 10th seed Shrewsbury 14-6.  At 4:00 pm today, they’ll be pitted against Doherty.

Doherty is ranked 2nd seed. But the teams faced each other earlier this season on Algonquin’s turf. ARHS dominated, 5-0.

Also in the running for state champs is Girls Outdoor Track team. At Saturday’s State Qualifier, the Girls ranked second as a team. The Boys team came in 19th place for their division.  The State Meet is this Saturday at Bridgewater State University. (Details TBA.)

Other teams ended their tournament bids over the last week. For most, the quarter finals sounded the death knell.

12th seed Boys Tennis overtook 5th seed Tantasqua 4-1 in the first round. But they fell to 13th seed St. John’s, 3-2, in the quarter final.

Softball outran Marlborough 4-1 in the first round. But 1st seed Nashoba outscored them 3-2 in the quarter final.

4th seed Girls Lacrosse bypassed the first round.  But 5th seed Westborough netted the quarter final win 10-8 at Algonquin.

8th seed Boys Lacross bypassed a preliminary round, and won the first round at Algonquin vs. 9th seed Hadley. But the quarter finals showed them to be outmatched against 1st seed Longmeadow. They lost 21-4.

Boys volleyball didn’t make it past their first round at Wachusett. They lost 3-2. With a record of 6-10, Girls tennis apparently failed to make the cut for tournaments.
