On Sunday, the police posted to their Facebook page a warning about a bear sighting in town:

Yesterday, a Southborough resident reported seeing a Black bear in the area of Burnett Road. As many of you may recall, we have been visited by these bears in the past. The Black bear population has steadily increased over the years, which has caused an increase in Black bear sightings. Here is a quick mass.gov link with information about Black bears in Massachusetts.

The government site’s advice to avoid attracting bears to your yard includes:

  • Keep trash in a covered container and consider double bagging or sprinkling with ammonia to mask scent
  • Take down bird feeders until December 1 (use flowers, nesting boxes or birdbaths to attract birds instead)
  • Don’t leave pet food or the dirty dish outside
  • Don’t use any meat or sweet foods in your compost
