Algonquin varsity football faced off against Westborough in the snow on Thursday morning. T-Hawks were eager to recapture the Thanksgiving trophy, won by Westborough for the past two years.

Late in the game, the outcome looked grim. In the 4th quarter, Westborough was leading 14-10 into the last two minutes of the game.

The Community Advocate covered the action:

With just a little over a minute remaining in the game, Westborough stopped Algonquin and took the ball over, only to fumble and turn it over. On the very next play Algonquin’s Billy Polymeros scored on a twelve-yard run (Hart point after) to take a 17-14 lead. Despite a long kickoff return by Westborough’s Avery Andrews with a penalty, Westborough was unable to score from Algonquin’s twenty-five yard line.

Jubilant T-Hawks celebrated more than a win in the 56th annual rivalry match. They capped off their first winning season in 17 years.

Southborough’s Chris Wraight shared photos of some dramatic moments.

The game marked the final competition in Algonquin’s fall sports season. Winter sports start up with a varsity swim meet this weekend.

Swimmers are listed as competing against Westborough. It appears to be part of the annual Swims Against Hunger league benefit for the Worcester County Food Bank and Oxfam America.

The meet is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, 2014, 6:00 pm at Westborough Tennis and Swim.
