SCAC: Cultural arts awards granted; seeking new members

Southborough Cultural Arts Council has just announced this year’s grant awards. And the group is on the lookout for new members to help its ongoing efforts to support the arts.

The organization is awarding $4,500 for 2017 programs in the arts, humanities, and interpretive sciences. Awards reflect the priority placed on Southborough based activities. And it looks like their outreach to artists paid off:

Jen Hansen, director of the council commented, “This year we were pleased to see more variety among our grant applicants. We actively encouraged more participation by visual artists, and it paid off. ”

Out of 22 applications, awards were granted to:

  • Southborough Library for Teen Crafternoons
  • Southborough Library for Stories and Songs to build a better world
  • Southborough Access Media for Express Yourself (art classes)
  • Mary Finn School for Cultural Awareness Week
  • Mary Finn School for Replacing Sand and Sand Tools for Sandbox
  • Mary Finn School for Exploring South American and Peruvian Embroidery
  • Algonquin High School Sachem Magazine (the school’s magazine featuring student writings and artwork)
  • Algonquin Rhythm Ballroom Dance Club
  • Southborough Recreation for the Southborough Summer Concert Series
  • Pilgrim Church for the Messiah Community Chorus
  • Handel’s Messiah concert
  • Assabet Valley Mastersingers for The Poet Sings concert

A reception for the recipients will be held at Expressions Art Bar, 162 Cordaville Road on Thursday, January 19 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

The SCAC is part of the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program, which funds thousands of local cultural activities.

The group currently has seven members (Louise Clough, Kristina Dobberpuhl, Jane Gordon, Jennifer Hansen, Jane Lesniewiski, Mary Simmons, and Kerry Stgermai Trippi). They are looking for more people to join them.  If you are interested in joining the SCAC, (or learning what that entails) email director@southborougharts.org.
