Obituary: James B. Mongillo, 85

James B. Mongillo, 85, of Southborough, and formerly West Simsbury, CT died Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough. He was the beloved husband of Alexandra (Schipke) Mongillo for the last 60 years.

Born in Southington, CT he was the son of the late Ralph and Antoinette (Bruno) Mongillo. Jim was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education, and also held a masters degree in mathematics from St. Joseph’s College in West Hartford, CT. He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy serving as a naval aviator and flight instructor. During the late 1950s he was stationed at Barbers Point Naval Air Base in Hawaii and piloted a Lockheed WV-2 Warning Star Super Constellation from Midway Island to Alaska as part of the Airborne Early Warning system. Following his years in the service he was a math teacher in the Hartford and East Hartford public schools. A devoted and beloved son, brother, father, grandfather and husband his true joy was his family.

In addition to his wife Sandra, he is survived by his children and grandchildren: Dr. Brian Mongillo and his wife Dr. Karen DeFazio, their children Domenic, and Sofia Mongillo of Southborough; Becky Mongillo and her husband Tom Moran, their children, Emily, and Abigale Moran of Harvard, MA; a sister, Diane DiCaprio of Southington, CT, a brother, Donald Mongillo and his wife Joan of Plantsville, CT; a nephew, Scott DiCaprio, 3 nieces, Dawn Perfetto, Deborah Watts and Darlene Ende. 

His funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at 11 AM at St. Anne Church, 20 Boston Road, Southborough. Internment will be in the Southborough Rural Cemetery.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, Milford Regional Medical Center, Fresenius Kidney Care, and Salmon VNA for their expert and loving care.
