Hands on electronics and computing camps next week (sign up now)

School is almost out. Do you know what your kids are doing next week?

I’ve previously posted about Rec’s annual morning camp for Pre-K – 6th graders and older CITs (7th – 9th grade). At the time, I promised to share more about Rec’s other camp opportunities.

If you have kids between the ages of 8-14, you can sign them up for one of Southborough Rec’s electronics and computing camps. Campers will build interactive devices and learn computer coding.

Instructors from Circuit Lab pitch:

Circuit Lab programs give kids the opportunity to create devices by blending technical concepts with hands-on experimentation in a creative environment. . . Each class session begins with a brief conceptual overview before launching into an interactive, hands-on activity.

Circuit Lab programs are a fun and creative way to give kids fluency and confidence in an increasingly necessary skill.

The camps will be held next week, June 26 – June 30th. (If you can’t make that week, another session will be offered the week of August 14-18.)

The half day camps will be held at the South Union Building, 21 Highland Street. Camps are split by age groups with 8-11 year olds in the morning and 11-14 year olds in the afternoon.

Registration costs $155 per child. The online registration deadline passed for next week – so you will need to contact Southborough Recreation directly to sign up. You can call them at 508-229-4452 or email jhom@southboroughma.com.

Below are the detailed descriptions:

HANDS ON ELECTRONICS
Ages 8 – 11, 8:30 – 11:30 am

Tinker with electronics while learning the basics of computer programming. We begin by experimenting with the fundamentals of electronics and circuitry, and step up to projects where our class of young makers will design their own interactive and programmable devices. Participants use the latest tools including Arduino (for building interactive devices) and Raspberry Pi (for learning about computers and coding) to experiment with LEDs, resistors, motors, and programming. Each class day gives participants the chance to design a hands-on project with the guidance of skilled Circuit Lab instructors.

CREATIVE COMPUTING
Ages 11 – 14, 12:30  – 3:30 pm

Get connected as we explore not just how to use computers, but how to make computers work for you. We will use the latest tools: Arduino (for building interactive devices) and Raspberry Pi (for learning about computers and coding) to design hands-on projects ranging from LED light shows to touchless musical instruments to wearable computers, all in the name of taking ideas and making them real. Participants have access to a comprehensive library of parts and equipment, and experienced instructors who can help them create the devices of their dreams.
