Who says downtown Southborough is dead? Next week, the Knights of Columbus hall will turn into a night club (of sorts) for one night.

Actually, it sounds like more of an “unplugged” concert/event. Southborough native Derek Johnson, aka Derek Curtis, will be playing songs from his new album and sharing stories in the “intimate listening room”.

Half of the cover (and all the tips) from the event will benefit for Girls Write Nashville.

The performance will take place on Friday, December 22nd. Doors will open at 7:30 pm for the 8:00 – 9:30 pm show. Entrance is $10 pp, and the press release invites the audience to BYOB.

In keeping with the “intimate” setting, there’s a 50 person limit. To get on the attendee list, you’ll need to email the performer at derekwcurtismusic@gmail.com.

So, what kind of sound can you expect to hear? The fact that he’s been living in Nashville will give you a hint of the genre. But, for a better idea, here’s a sample of the first release from his new album:

Southborough, MA – Derek Johnson (who goes by the stage name Derek Curtis) has been living in Nashville, Tennessee for the past six years. He is back in his hometown of Southborough for the holidays. Since the recent release of his new album “Carpetbagger”, Derek has toured all across the East Coast, Midwest, and even out to Vancouver on a Western Canadian fall tour. Back in Massachusetts to spend the holidays with his family, he will be putting on an intimate listening room show, sharing stories from this year’s travels. Half of the proceeds will help benefit a cause very dear to him.

“Girls Write Nashville” is a non-profit mentorship program for girls and teenagers created by one of Derek’s friends and fellow songwriter, Georgia English. GWN is focused on women’s empowerment through songwriting. They provide wonderful mentorship and recently finished their first season mentoring eight girls. The highlight of this past year was providing these young women the opportunity to record at one of Nashville’s finest studios, The Sound Emporium. Half of the $10 door cover will go straight to Girls Write Nashville to help fund their season next year, with a tip jar out for any additional donations. Doors open at 7:30 with music starting at 8.
