10 years of “Dull” senior men swapping stories & sharing laughs

The Senior Center's weekly social group for men celebrated a big anniversary last week. New members are always welcome to drop-in

You don’t have to be a cool guy to join the popular clique at the Southborough Senior Center. The Dull Men’s Group embraces the motto “It’s OK to be ordinary”.

The free social group for senior men has been meeting weekly on Friday mornings for ten years. Last week, current members, and some former, gathered for a celebration that certainly wasn’t dull.

Organizer Bill Harrington shared:

Forty members of the Southborough Senior Center’s Dull Mens Club stepped out of its’”dull” mode recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its’ founding. The party entitled “A Decade of Dullness” alludes the club’s motto “It is OK to be Ordinary”.

The group was treated to a performance by Len Solomon and his Bellowphone. It was a well received show defined as comedy with musical diversions. That was followed by a luncheon of BBQ ribs with all the fixin’s. The affair concluded with an appropriately decorated anniversary cake and ice cream.

Even dull men need to have a day out on the town once in a while.

At the event the group also reminisced about past gatherings and took a moment to remember group members who passed away over the years. (Scroll down for more photos and videos from the festivities.)

New members are encouraged to join them for their casual meetings at 10:00 am on Friday mornings (with a few exceptions for holidays, etc). The meetings are, and mostly have been, in person at the Senior Center. (There were periods due to Covid when the group kept in touch via zoom.)

Last week’s celebration was more entertaining than their regular meetups. But that doesn’t mean they are usually dull.

Harrington quipped that members “make a concerted effort to solve all the world’s problems which they generally do!” He continued:

There’s stories about past lives (before retiring), some generally sound advice, catching up on town doings, occasional speakers and always a “good” joke or two. It all makes for the fastest hour of the week. If all this might appeal to you prepare to share your dullness and join them most any Friday morning.

Below are some pictures that Harrington shared from the event, followed by two video shorts captured of Solomon performing with his inventions:
