This week in sports: ARHS Winter athletes score big

Last week was a big one for some Algonquin athletes.

On Saturday, the Gymnastics team brought home the Mid Wach league title. After two years in second place, the team scored 5 points higher than their closest competitor. And the school swept the bars competition, taking the first 5 places.

The team leaders also won special kudos. ARHS captain Julia Callaghan was named Senior of the Year “recognizing her leadership and season-long excellence”. Coach Jennifer Crook snagged Coach of the Year. The Telegram’s coverage is worth a read, noting more accomplishments of individual team members.

On Saturday, Gonk Wrestling competed in the Division 2 Central MA sectionals on Saturday. The team didn’t dominate, but Shea Garand and Andrew Goodard both came in 2nd and Andre Knapp fourth for their weight classes. That earned them a place at States this Friday at Milton High.

According to the Community Advocate, ARHS’ runner Tess Reyes also had a great day. She won the 1000 meter in 3:10.41 at the Division 1 Invitational Track Meet.

ARHS skiers also had reason to celebrate last week. The school’s super fans @THawksTweets tweeted about their accomplishments:

Girls ski wins cmass. . . Kaleigh Reynolds came in first place individually in cmass and advances to states along with 4 other teammates. Andrew Mihalek advances for boys

Boys Basketball’s win over Westborough on Saturday took them from a losing to even record. That followed the team’s loss to Shephard Hill on Tuesday. But Tuesday’s game wasn’t a complete downer. Kyle Henderson earned his 1,000th career point for Gonk ball during the game.

Swimming/Diving State Championships are slated for this weekend, but psych sheets aren’t posted yet. ARHS competed in the Swim/Dive Central-West sectionals over the weekend, but those results aren’t out either. So, I may be posting more on that and other upcoming post-season tournaments in a few days.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week.
