Assabet Valley seeking Southborough representative to School Committee; Apply by August 28th (Updated)

The Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School Committee needs someone from Southborough to join them. The Town shared the word yesterday afternoon, following the recent resignation of member Christopher Evers.

To tell the truth, I didn’t recall that Southborough had a representative. It turns out, that’s because it only came up on the ballots once since I’ve been running the blog. Evers was elected to his 4 year term in 2016.

As for filling the seat for the remaining year, the Town’s announcement explains it is the joint responsibility of Southborough’s School Committee and selectmen. They are seeking volunteers:

There is a vacancy on the Assabet Valley Regional Technical School Committee as a result of a recent resignation of a Southborough member. In the event of a mid-term vacancy, the selectmen and the local School Committee members from the member town involved, acting jointly, shall appoint a member to serve until the next annual town election, at which election a successor shall be elected to serve for the balance of the unexpired term, if any.

If you are interested in serving in this position, please send your resume and letter of interest to the Board of Selectmen at selectmenoffice@southboroughma.com by Wednesday, August 28th.

Updated (8/22/19 9:48 am): It was pointed out that I wrote that Evers was elected in 2019. That was a typo. He was elected in 2016 and served for 3 of the 4 elected years. The remaining year in his term needs to be filled.

According to Chair Brian Shea of the Board of Selectmen, the position was advertised on the Town website as a vacancy since July. (However, I have to note that lot’s of vacancies are listed. As far as I can see, no notice was put up when this one was added to the list. But, I do see that the Town tweeted about the vacancy 10 days ago.)

Given the need to fill the position, Shea agreed with the of the Southborough School Committee (Keturah Martin) that it made sense to give a final push to advertise the need and provide a deadline. He noted:

The work of the Assabet School Committee is moving forward, and it is important to have Southborough representation on the Committee as soon as possible.

As the Town previously tweeted, anyone interested in learning more can check out the committee’s recent agendas/minutes here.
