Events this week: ARHS & Trottier parent nights; Senior nutrition, picnic and hike; K-8 half day; Scout info nights for girls; and HarvestFest (Updated)

Here are highlights of what’s happening around town this week. (In the third week of school, back to school activities still dominate with info sessions, curriculum nights, and extra curricular registration events.)

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

  • Woodward Photo Day @ Woodward School: Make sure your 2nd and 3rd graders are dressed to pose for class pics and their individual photos.
  • Nutrition Demo – Protein and a Healthy Heart (11:30 am – 12:30 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: Free nutrition program for senior. Hannaford’s Store Dietitian will talk about the newest info on eggs and cardiovascular health, plus adequate protein amounts for people over 55. She will also prepare some healthy items and will provide the recipes to take home and to try on your own. Sign up at the center desk or by calling 508-229-4453.
  • 6th-8th Grade Book Group (4:00 – 5:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: The free monthly book discussion group for 6th-8th graders is run by Amy Townsley. Book club members read a book selected each month and then meet for discussion & activities. Refreshments provided by Wegmans and Friends of Southborough Library. Registration is required. This is the first meeting of the school year. The book being discussed is The Epic Failure of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya.   • ARHS Parent-Teacher Open House (6:30 – 8:10 pm) @ Algonquin Regional High School, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough: Parents are invited to meet students’ teachers and learn a little about their classes. Follow the student schedule starting with period 1 at 6:30. Each period is 10 minutes with 5 minutes to get to the next class.
  • Poetry Workshop (6:30 – 8:30 pm) @ Southborough Library, Main Level: At the semi-monthly sessions, Everyone is asked to bring in five copies of their original poetry for supportive feedback. If you don’t have a poem, come and share your insights. The group meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.

Wednesday, September 11, 2019 

  • Neary Principal’s and SOS Coffee (9:30 am – 10:30 am) @ Neary School cafeteria: This session’s topic is Room Parents and Volunteer Information
  • Sr Center End of Summer Picnic (12:00 – 2:00 pm) @ Southborough Senior Center: For seniors only. Registration is required with a suggested donation of $10 each. That covers the BBQ Buffet. To register, sign up at the front desk or call (508) 229-4453. (Note: Registration is limited and Southborough residents will be prioritized.) For details see dedicated post
  • Cookbook Club (6:30 – 8:00 pm) @ Southborough Library: Join the Library for its free monthly cookbook group. This month’s participants will each cook a different dish from The Silver Palate cook book to bring in and share. To avoid overlap, email Marianna (at msorensen@southboroughma.com) with your selection.
  • Recruiting night for BSA girls troop (7:00 – 8:00 pm) @ Lincoln Street Elementary School, 76 Lincoln Street, Northborough: Calling all Girls Grades 6-12 to join Northborough-Southborough Troop 823! Get more information and sign-up For details, see dedicated post.

  • ARHS Activities Extravaganza (12:00 am – 12:00 am) @ Algonquin’s Rotunda Courtyard: Takes place 5th period over lunch; Rain date is the next day.
  • Bay Circuit Hike (Senior Program) (9:30 am – 11:00 am) @ Meet at Southborough Senior Center: Trailblazer program for active seniors Hike about 2 miles on the Bay Circuit Trail, Concord. We will carpool to starting point. Carl Guyer will lead. Please remember to bring bug/tick repellent and wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
  • K-8 Early Release Day (11:20 am – 12:00 pm) @ : All Southborough K-8 schools are dismissed early. (Neary and Trottier at 11:20, Finn and Woodward at noon)
  • Trottier Canvas Parent Access Info Session (5:30 – 6:15 pm) @ Trottier Middle School Auditorium: For parents of Trottier students – an information session on using Canvas (the school’s online Learning Management System). Please attend if you would like additional information, support accessing your account, or helpful hints on how to navigate Canvas. Hosted by Sandy Scordato, the Technology Integration Specialist.
  • Neary Instrument Rental Night (5:30 – 7:30 pm) @ Neary School: An open house format for parents to drop in and fill out rental agreements for students’ instruments.
  • Trottier Curriculum Night (6:15 – 8:00 pm) @ Trottier Middle School: Parents are invited to meet students’ teachers and learn a little about their classes. Follow your kids’ Tuesday schedules. (Snap a photo of your student’s schedule!) From 6:15 – 6:30, you can either visit teachers not on the Tuesday schedule go to the 7th Grade Band & Chorus Presentations. A mini-schedule will begin at 6:30 pm. Each period is 8 minutes followed by 5 minutes to get to the next room.
  • Girl Scout Registration Night (6:30 – 8:00 pm) @ Finn School cafeteria: If you are interested in signing up your daughter or learning more about it, come to the the annual Girl Scouts registration night. This night is really for the parents. You will have the chance to fill out forms and ask questions. (It’s also a great chance for parents already involved to update their CORI forms.)

  • Chestnut Hill Farm HarvestFest (10:00 am – 3:00 pm) @ Chestnut Hill Farm, Chestnut Hill Road: The annual big rain-or-shine festival at the farm, just earlier in the season than usual. Live music, food and beverages, farm animals, fantastic vendors, hayrides, contests, and games and activities for all ages. The first 100 families get a small pumpkin with admission. Cost for TTOR members is $9/adult and $6/child capped at $24 per family For non-members it’s $15/adult and $10/child capped at $30 per family. Admission covers everything except food & beverages, hayrides, and additional pumpkins. For details, see dedicated post.

Updated (9/10/19 8:53 am): Sunset Yoga at the farm was cancelled due to the EEE threat.

Sunset yoga at Chestnut Hill Farm was rescheduled for 9/26 but then cancelled because of the EEE threat (the farm is complying with the town’s advisement to cancel/reschedule evening activities). We hope to see you at sunset yoga in the spring!
