Town granting extension on real estate and personal property taxes

If have been stressed out over paying a real estate or personal property tax bill issued last month, you’ll be relieved to read that you have close to two additional months to make the payment without incurring penalties.

Last week, the Governor approved an Act to allow Towns to extend the deadlines for some tax payments for this quarter. The Town is taking up that option for the real estate and personal property taxes.

Here is today’s announcement:

The Southborough Board of Selectmen, acting under newly granted authority by the Legislature and Governor, is announcing the extension of due dates for the following real estate and personal property bills:

Fourth Quarter Real Estate and Personal Property Tax Bills:

  • Original Due Date:  May 1, 2020
  • New Due Date:  June 1, 2020

In addition to extending the due date for payments, the Board is also waiving the payment of interest and other penalties in the event of late payment of any real estate & personal property tax – giving Southborough taxpayers until June 30, 2020, to make payment without incurring interest or demand late fees.

Please note that this newly granted authority only allows municipal chief executives to extend statutory payment deadlines and waive statutory interest and penalties through the end of the fiscal year on June 30, 2020. Under the new state legislation, payments made after June 30, 2020 will be subject to interest and penalties back to June 1, 2020.

During the COVID-19 emergency, the office of the Treasurer/Collector is closed to the public. However, there are several optional payment methods available:
