Obituary: John B. ‘Jack’ Gunning, 59

John B.’Jack’ Gunning, 59 of Westborough and formerly of Southborough, died unexpectedly on Thursday, December 16, 2021 after being stricken ill at home. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Morrison) Gunning for almost 30 years and proud father of Sarah Gunning.

Born in Newton and raised in Southborough, Jack was the fourth child of the late James F. Gunning and Katherine H. (Comerford) Gunning. He was a 1980 graduate of Algonquin Regional High School in Northboro and briefly attended Fitchburg State University. Jack was a veteran of the US Navy serving from 1985 to 1989 as a diesel engine mechanic on several nuclear submarines. After leaving the Navy, he became an apprentice for the Pipefitters Local Union 537 in Boston and earned his journeyman’s license in 1997 before retiring in 2017. Jack was the life of the party and always carried his guitar with him to entertain his family and friends with a song. Jack had a love for playing golf and a natural talent for music. He adored his crossword and jigsaw puzzles, was an avid reader, history buff, and devoted Boston sports fan. A member of the Westborough Country Club for almost 20 years, he befriended everyone he saw on the course. 

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by his siblings, Stephen Gunning, Kevin Gunning, Paul Gunning, Katie (Gunning) MacArthur, and Anne Gunning; several nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

He is predeceased by his oldest brother, James A. Gunning.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, December 20th from 4 to 7 PM at the Morris Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Route 30, Southborough.

A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 21st at 10:30am at St Anne Church, 20 Boston Road, Southborough.

My condolences Paul to you and your siblings, and of course to Patricia and Sarah. Such a tragedy a young man with so much love and talent taken too soon. God Bless Jack.
