Southborough emergency response groups looking for volunteers

Southborough has two emergency response teams — the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) — that have banded together to provide emergency response services for the town. The two groups are comprised of volunteers, and they’re looking for members.

For the past several years, the Municipal Facilities Committee and others have been working on a plan to build a new police station. While a scheme has been developed for a new one-story building to replace the existing police station, the committee told selectmen on Tuesday night they don’t think the design will work.

Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. told selectmen on Tuesday night that self-contained breathing apparatus are “literally the lifeline” of firefighters responding to fires, hazmat situations, carbon monoxide leaks, and the like. He also told selectmen some of Southborough’s SCBAs no longer meet current safety standards.

Reverse-911 system mix up on Saturday

Several of you wrote in to say you received one or more reverse-911 calls warning about road closures due to the NECC road race on Saturday morning. Problem was, the calls were received on Saturday evening, long after the race was over. I asked Police Chief Jane Moran what happened.

Back in September voters approved the purchase of a new aerial ladder truck. The truck is currently being built according to the town’s specifications, and the Southborough Fire Department has set up a website where you can track its progress.

Towns to study regionalizing police and fire dispatch services

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to post for a while now. Earlier this year, Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. and Police Chief Jane Moran went before the Board of Selectmen to float the idea of centralizing police and fire dispatch services with neighbors Ashland and Hopkinton as a way to cut down on costs.
