The state Department of Transportation said yesterday that the brick-sized chunks of concrete that fell from a Massachusetts Turnpike overpass onto Cordaville Road Wednesday night does not mean the bridge is failing.

Southborough Police last night closed a 1-mile stretch of Route 85 after “brick-sized” pieces of concrete fell from the Mass Pike overpass onto the roadway, reports the Metrowest Daily News.

When it rains, it pours, and when it doesn’t, well, you have this summer. Our lack of rain prompted the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency last week to issue a drought advisory for much of central Massachusetts, including Southborough.

Voluntary water ban now in effect

For the past several summers, Southborough has instituted a voluntary water ban during the summer months. Selectman last week voted to do the same this summer. The voluntary ban went into effect on June 30 and will run through September 22.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority recently released its annual water quality report — you should have received a copy in the mail, but you can also check it out online — and Southborough did just fine. When tested for PCE, lead, and copper, our water was well below the detection limits.

Selectman last week put their stamp of approval on a design to revamp Main Street from Sears Road to Park Street. It’s a project that has been in the works for about a decade. DPW Superintendent Karen Galligan has said she hopes construction will begin in 2014, but according to a recent story by the Worcester Business Journal, getting the anticipated state funding for the project may be an uphill battle.

We all know the stretch of Main Street west of Route 85 along the town common can get pretty tight, especially when cars are parked along the road. Selectmen last night unanimously endorsed a plan to widen the roadway to create as many as 14 dedicated parking spots. It’s part of a larger plan to redesign Main Street from Sears Road to Park Street.
