Regional school committee clears roadblock to honoring former music director

Since he passed away unexpectedly on a school trip to Greece last year, friends and relatives of longtime Algonquin music director Dennis Wrenn have pushed to name one of the performing arts spaces at Algonquin in his honor. Earlier this week, they learned that wasn’t going to happen because the district’s naming policy imposes a 5-year waiting period. Upon hearing the news, dozens took to Facebook to express their disappointment.

Northborough voters allocate money for court action against Southborough

It probably doesn’t come as a big surprise that Northborough Town Meeting voted overwhelmingly on Monday night to set aside $100K to take Southborough to court over the Algonquin reimbursement dispute.

Northborough holds its annual town meeting tonight, and one of the things they’ll decide is whether to spend $100K to seek a declaratory judgment against Southborough over the ongoing Algonquin reimbursement battle.

Regional school committee declines to get in middle of debt issue

At a special meeting this week, the regional school committee decided to stay out of the tiff between Northborough and Southborough over how to split debt remaining on the Algonquin renovation. The Northborough Board of Selectmen had asked them to file a request for a declaratory judgment on the issue, but the school committee voted unanimously not to do that.

Regional school committee looks for naming suggestions

When Dennis Wrenn died last year, many in the community called for the Algonquin auditorium to be named in his honor. Turns out the regional school committee has a policy and procedure for how buildings or parts of buildings get named. They even have a subcommittee.

Regional school committee talks Algonquin debt assessment, but no decisions made

At the Regional School Committee meting last week, committee members discussed how to resolve the disagreement between Northborough and Southborough over the Algonquin debt assessment. The Metrowest Daily News reports the only decision they were able to make was that they aren’t prepared to make a decision.

Good news (finally!) on school budgets, along with some words of caution

There hasn’t been much good news on the budget front this year, but School Superintendent Charles Gobron got to share some last night. Gobron told the school committee that thanks to additional cuts, cooperation from teachers, and some help from Uncle Sam, the school was able to trim their budget by an additional $350K.

We all know there are two ways to balance a budget: cut costs or increase revenues. And while the Advisory Committee last night had their share of suggestions on ways to cut costs in the school budgets, they spent a fair amount of time talking about ways to bring more cash into the districts.

Southborough share of regional school budget to increase by 5%

The regional school committee on Wednesday night approved a budget for the coming fiscal year that is a 0.66% increase over the current year’s budget. But because of growing enrollments, Southborough’s share of the budget will be 5% higher than it was last year.
