Family’s request to cut down tree they call a ’safety hazard’ denied

Outside the Marlboro Road home of Bill and Melissa Shields stands a tall red oak. It may be majestic, but the Shields say the tree, which stands on town property, creates a hazard. On Tuesday night they petitioned the town to take it down.

Town employees say they tried mediation in Pizzeria Uno incident

But for those of you who have wondered why the town didn’t try a path like mediation before launching the 7-month investigation that cost the town at least $13K in legal bills, the Metrowest Daily News has the answer.

No decision on whether to reimburse legal fees for town employees

The Board of Selectmen again last night considered whether to reimburse $14K in legal fees incurred by town employees as part of the so-called Southborough Eight investigation. While two selectmen — Bill Boland and John Rooney — said they were strongly in favor of doing so, the board ultimately deferred its decision.

Southborough sets aside cash for legal battle with Northborough

At their town meeting this spring, Northborough voters allocated $100K for a battle with Southborough over the ongoing Algonquin reimbursement dispute. Last week, Southborough decided to set aside some cash of its own.

We all know the stretch of Main Street west of Route 85 along the town common can get pretty tight, especially when cars are parked along the road. Selectmen last night unanimously endorsed a plan to widen the roadway to create as many as 14 dedicated parking spots. It’s part of a larger plan to redesign Main Street from Sears Road to Park Street.

In all the discussion about St. Mark’s lawn last week, some commenters also griped about bus traffic to and from the school on School Street and Latisquama Road. Residents along both roads presented a petition to selectmen last week asking them to do something about traffic they called “dangerous.”

Selectman regrets investigation; board considers reimbursing town employees

“I wish this whole thing never happened,” Selectman Bill Boland said last night. He was referring to the 7-month long investigation of Southborough town employees that stemmed from comments made last September at an after-work gathering at Pizzeria Uno in Westborough. “I wish it went away. But I can’t do anything about that.”

At their meeting last week, Selectmen voted unanimously to release a report from a performance assessment conducted last fall on the four finalists for Southborough police chief. But in the version they released, all information related to the candidates’ performance was blacked out.

Fire Chief John Mauro Jr. told selectmen on Tuesday night that self-contained breathing apparatus are “literally the lifeline” of firefighters responding to fires, hazmat situations, carbon monoxide leaks, and the like. He also told selectmen some of Southborough’s SCBAs no longer meet current safety standards.
