Two new candidates will be considered for the position of Southborough Fire Chief, the screening committee announced today, and both are current members of the Southborough Fire Department. Captain Joseph Mauro and Lieutenant Christian Dano will be interviewed for the position by the Board of Selectmen at a meeting later this month.

Dano and Joseph Mauro join Cumberland, RI Sr. Deputy Fire Chief Fred Mitchell, who was interviewed by selectmen back in December, as finalists for the fire chief position. Joseph Mauro is the brother of Fire Chief John Mauro Jr., who retired in September after 38 years on the force.

Selectmen interviewed Mitchell in December, but the board decided to defer their decision over doubts about whether he was the right person for the job. They then asked the Fire Chief Screening Committee to recommend additional candidates to consider.

Along with Mitchell, the Fire Chief Screening Committee originally advanced Haverill Deputy Chief Brian Moriarty to the final round, but Moriarty dropped out of running before being interviewed by selectmen, leaving Mitchell as the only finalist.

The addition of Joseph Mauro and Dano to the finalist pool will come as welcome news to residents who criticized the screening committee for not advancing any internal candidates in the first go-round. Selectmen have maintained that the goal is to find the best candidate for the job regardless of whether they are promoted from within the Southborough Fire Department or not.

Selectmen will interview Mauro, Dano, and Mitchell on Thursday, February 16 starting at 6:00 pm in the Town House Hearing Room. The interviews will be open to the public.

Above: Police Chief Jane Moran talks budgets with the Board of Selectmen

Southborough’s public safety chiefs went before the Board of Selectmen and Advisory Committee last night to make the case for a level-service budget for next year. Both Interim Fire Chief Michael Dunne and Police Chief Jane Moran said proposed cuts would harm their already understaffed departments.

A level-service budget for the fire department would be $1.8 million, about $32,000 over the current fiscal year. For the fire department, taxpayers would have to approve $1.64 million, about $87,000 over the current year.

Dunne said Southborough’s Fire Department ideally would operate with five firefighters on duty during each of its four shifts. Currently two shifts have five and the other two have four firefighters. Proposed cuts to the overtime budget could mean some shifts would have to operate with only three firefighters on duty, Dunne said.

“You are going to have some shifts with three people,” he told Selectmen and Advisory Committee members. “That’s just unsafe for the firefighters, and I don’t think it’s what the residents of Southborough expect.”

Dunne also said the proposed budget does not build in enough money for training on-call and full-time personnel.

Moran told board members the police department is also running lean. The department currently has 13 full-time officers, the same number it had in 2000, but Moran said call volumes have increased significantly over the past decade.

She also said the nature of crimes today – things like home break-ins and domestic violence – are more time-consuming than the types of calls they handled in 2000. “We don’t just sit around anymore. We jump from call to call,” she said.

Selectmen and Advisory Committee members asked questions of both chiefs, but did not say whether they would support a level-service budget for either department.

You can read another take on last night’s discussion in this article by the Metrowest Daily News.

The fire began just after 6:00 pm. Crews from Framingham and Southborough battled the blaze, while the Natick and Ashland departments assisted by covering the stations. The flames were stubborn, and firefighters were ultimately pulled from the buildings over fears it might collapse.

Earlier this month the Southborough Police Department warned residents that an organization seeking donations for the police force was a scam. Now the Southborough Fire Department wants residents to know that a group soliciting donations on their behalf is the real thing. Here’s the statement put out by the department.

Dear Friends,

The Southborough Firefighters will be conducting a telephone fundraising drive beginning the week of January 23rd. This effort enables us to provide financial assistance for charitable organizations and community activities. It also allows us to give college scholarships to deserving students, and provides relief for sick and injured firefighters.

Should you have any questions regarding this fundraiser, do not hesitate to call us at the fire station. On behalf of the entire membership, please accept my sincerest thanks for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Joseph E. Hubley
President
Southborough Permanent Firefighters Association
IAFF Local 3129
