For more than ten years, Fay School has played host to a Special Olympics basketball tournament, and this year is no exception. On Saturday the school will welcome athletes and volunteers for one memorable day. The Southborough community is invited to stop by and check out the action.

Fay School will welcome Special Olympic athletes to Harlow Gymnasium tomorrow for the regional basketball games of the Massachusetts Special Olympics. This exciting annual event is free and open to the public. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 am, with competition beginning at 10:00 am and running until about 5:00 pm.

Basketball teams will compete in traditional, unified, and skills and drills formats. Fay students and faculty will volunteer throughout the day as scoring officials, opening ceremonies coordinators, drill assistants, and set-up and clean-up crew.

The event highlights the intersection between Fay School’s motto, “You Can If You Will,” and the Special Olympics Athlete’s Oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Four Algonquin wrestlers are heading to the Individual Division 1 State Tournament on Saturday. They qualified after strong showings in the division sectional tournament last weekend. My Southborough reader Katarina sent in this recap of the division meet:

Albert Marsocci (220 lbs.) took second place and was the top place winner for Algonquin. Finishing in third place were Joe Cozzolino (120 lbs.), Alex Mazzola (170 lbs.), and James Officer (285 lbs.). These four wrestlers will represent Algonquin at the Individual Division 1 State championships. Placing fifth in the tournament and advancing to states as alternates are Chris Steidler (126), Zach Marcoulier (138), Carter Guzzi (152), and Matt Cofer (195). Placing sixth at the tournament was Mike Ryan at 182 lbs.

Congratulations to Zach Marcoulier on the 100th win of his career as he joins an elite group of Algonquin Wrestlers to mark that achievement. Previous members of the 100 Win Club are Baird Lashley (1989), Michael Wrin (2010) and Dylan Foley (2011).

The Algonquin Wrestling team finished fourth at the tournament and will be one of the teams representing central Mass in the Division 1 Team State Tournament. The top 16 Division 1 teams in Massachusetts wrestle on Sunday, February 19 at Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

The individual state tournament takes place on Saturday, February 11 at Weymouth High School. Join me in wishing our Algonquin competitors the best of luck!

During a halftime celebration at the Algonquin/St. John’s basketball game on Tuesday, the Algonquin girls field hockey team was honored for its winning season. The team captured the Central District 1 championship title last fall. It was their second championship win in as many years.

By all accounts, the Algonquin wrestling team, under the direction of new coaches Brian Kramer and Derek Grant, is off to a great start this year.

The team opened its season last month with a dual meet against Tyngsboro. My Southborough reader Beth reports Algonquin was behind in team points, but managed to come on strong in the upper weight classes and notch the win at 47-30, with wrestlers Carter Guzzi, Matt Cofer, Alex Mazzola, and Chris Gwyn all beating their opponents.

At the team’s first tournament of the season at King Philip High School, Algonquin placed sixth out of 12 teams. Several wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes, with James Officer (285 lbs) taking first place, Zach Marcoulier (138 lbs) taking second, and Eric Firth (285 lbs) and Alex Mazzola (170 lbs) both capturing fourth place. Several other wrestlers compiled wins, including junior Nick West who had his first varsity win.

Later in the month Algonquin wrestling competed in the annual Holiday Wrestling Tournament at Framingham High School where they placed 15th in the two-day tourney. My Southborough reader Katarina said after the first day Zach Marcoulier (138 lbs) and James Officer (285 lbs) were 2-0, and several other wrestlers were still in the tournament with just one loss. Friday morning action knocked out most of the remaining Algonquin wrestlers, except Zach, James, and Chris Steidler (126 lbs). The tournament ended with Zach and James placing second in their respective weight classes, and Chris placing eight in his.

There’s lots more action to come this season for the wrestling team, and supporters say several wrestlers are poised to go on to the post season. You can visit the Algonquin wrestling website at arhs-wrestling.com to follow along.
