After reaching its highest point in 17 years, the unemployment rate in Southborough ticked down slightly in August to 6.5%. The July rate was 6.8%. State and national numbers held relatively steady at 8.9% and 9.6%, respectively.

Southborough’s unemployment rate increased from 5.1% in April to 5.8% in May according to numbers released recently by the state. Even so, unemployment in Southborough is still well below state and national levels. The unemployment rate in Massachusetts in May was 8.0%. Nationally it was 9.1%.

This just in from my peeps on the street. Falconi Bros. is offering gas at $1.49 a gallon today. I checked, and the last time gas was that cheap in New England was July 2001, so get yourself to the pump! Falconi Bros. is located on Boston Road near the center of town. (map)

An upside to the economic downturn

Word has gotten around that Falconi Bros. on Boston Rd. has the cheapest gas in town. When I drove by this evening, cars were lined up 5 deep. Falconi is in the neighborhood of $2.94 for a gallon of regular. By comparison, the Mobile on Rte. 9 at Oak Hill Rd. is $3.15.
