A week from Saturday, Southborough Annual Town Meeting voters will be asked to decide on the Town’s budget for July 2020 through June 2021. Town officials still aren’t in agreement on what that budget should be. That may change tomorrow, when the Advisory Committee and Board of Selectmen “meet”.

So far, the budget calls for less than a  0.85% tax increase over this year’s budget, less than $89 extra dollars per average household. That may change after the Board hears from the Advisory Committee.

Last night, selectmen went through the budget for FY21 with the Finance Team. Figures were looking much more favorable than the last time they spoke. Selectmen were shown a budget that would come out at a projected 0.83% tax increase.

Tuesday night the Board of Selectmen and the Advisory Committee agreed to hold a Special Town Meeting in the fall on several Capital Expense items. References were also made to using the meeting for a planned zoning Article on the Downtown Business Village.

This winter, the Town’s Finance team and the Board of Selectmen have been hashing out the Fiscal Year 2021 budget to bring to Annual Town Meeting voters. One option recently floated was tabling some capital spending to a Special Town Meeting in the fall. In the meantime, a committee would better research the Town’s anticipated capital expenses and how to handle them.
