Obituary: Christopher A. Hamel, 70

Christopher A. Hamel, 70, of Southborough, died Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

He was the son of the late Charles F. and Eleanor (Onthank) Hamel and husband of Jane (Coveney) Hamel, who were married for 48 years.

Chris graduated from Marian High School class of 1973, where he played football and was captain of the hockey team. It was at Marian that Chris met Jane and together they built a wonderful life. Chris then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served aboard the USS Iwo Jima based in Norfolk, VA for two years before transferring into the Naval Reserve.

Chris worked for Eversource Energy in gas operations for more than 34 years. After retiring he worked briefly for FP Marbardy Company with his good friend, Fred.

Family was most important to Chris – he never missed his children’s hockey, baseball, soccer games & music concerts. In recent years he knew he was blessed to have his children living with & beside him on the Onthank Family land in Southborough. Chris’ great passions were for cars – classic and new – and loved long drives across the U.S.

In addition to his wife, Chris is survived by his daughter, Caitlyn Hamel and son, Ryan Hamel and his wife Jaci all of Southborough. He is also survived by his siblings, Carol Long and her husband Wayne of Southborough, Bill Hamel and his wife Kathy of Bedford, Steve Hamel and his wife Carol of Falmouth, Chuck Hamel of Wendell and David Hamel of FL. He also leaves his in laws Bob & Paula Coveney of Franklin, Ed & Donna Coveney of Cape Cod and Ray & Anne Coveney of Kansas City as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Visiting hours for Chris will be held on Monday, August 18, 2025, from 4:00-7:00PM at the Morris-Johnston Funeral Home, 40 Main Street, Southborough, MA 01772. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Southborough Rural Cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road, Southborough, MA 01772.
