Last week, most Algonquin varsity teams were still just preparing for the fall season through practices and some scrimmages. But one team’s season is already in full swing with two wins already under their belts — Boys Golf.
Here are my highlights from those Titans competitions last week and the schedule for this week, with several other teams kicking off their seasons.
On Tuesday, ARHS Boys Golf beat Acton-Boxborough (201–208) before school was even in session for Algonquin. The team followed with a 195–235 win over Marlborough on Thursday.
This afternoon, Girls Soccer will get into the action. According to Metrowest Daily News, players on their team to “watch” this season are prior CMass All-Stars Caity O’Hearn and Ella Timmons. The Community Advocate noted that the team graduated nine players last June, but has six seniors on the team.
More season openers are scheduled tomorrow and Thursday for Field Hockey, Girls Volleyball, and Boys Soccer.
According to the Community Advocate, the Boys Soccer Coach is planning a conservative approach for this season given that their players who graduated included two of last year’s top scorers in the league. Their roster only includes three seniors.
While Football has already scrimmaged twice, the team’s season opener will wait until September 12th (and no other scrimmages are currently on the books). The team has gotten pre-season press about its “hunger” for getting further in the playoffs this year. The MetroWest Daily News’ story included the hopeful detail:
Algonquin brings back four of its starting five offensive lineman from a year ago that paved the way for a dominant running attack. Titans coach Mark Allen – in his sixth season as a head coach and 14th on staff – has never brought back so many starters on the line before. Their continuity will provide a foundation for an offense turning to mostly new playmakers at nearly every skill position and behind center.
You can read the full story here. And here you can check out the paper’s list of 63 area football players to watch this season, including Titans Anthony Bessard, Gavin Butterfield, Michael Lefebvre, and Henry Rogers. Plus, you can read the paper’s prior coverage of the challenging competition the team is scheduled to face this season with “three Division 1 playoff teams, one from Division 2 and a Division 4 Final Four squad.”
As for Cross Country, the teams don’t have meets scheduled until the 17th.
Here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week1:
