The Tricentennial Committee is promoting a free ice cream social to take place this Sunday.

The event is planned for 2:00 – 4:00 pm on September 7th. Since the forecast for that afternoon is dicey, I reached out to learn the plan to alert the public if they decide to cancel due to rain.

Organizers promise to post an update on the Tricentennial Committee’s Facebook page at noon on Sunday to confirm or postpone the event. (For readers that don’t have Facebook, you don’t need an account to see what’s publicly posted. Just x out the popup window that asks you to login.)

The event will be held at Heritage Park, between the Southborough Library and St. Mark’s Street, at the corner of Route 85. The park is accessible via a pathway from the library parking lot.

Despite the event flyer’s cute cones, I’m told the free ice cream scoops will be served in cups. But the exciting news is that there will be fancier flavors to choose from than simple chocolate and vanilla. After soliciting public feedback, organizers purchased the most popular.

See the committee’s announcement with those and other details below:

The Southborough Tricentennial Committee invites residents of all ages to kick off the countdown to the town’s 300th birthday at a special community ice cream social, What’s the SCOOP on Southborough’s Tricentennial?, on Sunday, September 7, from 2–4 p.m. at Heritage Park (behind the Southborough Library, corner of Route 85 and St. Mark’s Street).

Guests will enjoy a free scoop of Richardson’s ice cream, with delicious flavors including Oreo Cookie, Death by Chocolate, French Vanilla, Raspberry Sorbet (non-dairy), and Salted Caramel Pretzel. While savoring a sweet treat, attendees can meet members of the Tricentennial and Fundraising committees and learn more about the exciting plans for a full year of celebrations honoring Southborough’s 300th anniversary.

Highlights include:

  • Learn about the exciting calendar of events planned for Southborough’s year-long 300th anniversary celebration
  • An opportunity to support the celebration through the purchase of a commemorative engraved brick, to be installed in Heritage Park as a lasting legacy for future generations.
  • A chance to sign up for the Tricentennial e-newsletter and enter to win an engraved brick.
  • Connect with neighbors and get involved in shaping this once-in-a-lifetime milestone event.

Ice cream will be served in partnership with Southborough’s own teen entrepreneur, Connor Lester, of the local ice cream stand inside Sperry’s on Route 9.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, enjoy a delicious treat, and get a sneak peek at what’s in store for Southborough’s Tricentennial year,” said a spokesperson for the Southborough Tricentennial Committee. “We encourage everyone to join us and be part of the excitement.”

Rain date to be determined. Fingers crossed for great weather!
