The Southborough Senior Center’s award winning group for active seniors shared news on their recent “10th birthday party”.
Here is their recap, followed by contributed photos:
Over 65 members of the Southborough Senior Center Trailblazers Club celebrated the 10th birthday of the club on Wednesday afternoon, September 3, at the Southborough Senior Center. The club was organized and initiated by Mary Ann Anderson in 2015 as a vehicle to provide year-round activities for active seniors. In the intervening years, with strong support from the Senior Center Staff, the assistance of many dedicated volunteers, and the guidance and leadership of Mary Ann, club members have hiked many of local trails, including the Wachusett and Quabbin Reservoirs, climbed Mt. Wachusett, hiked World’s End, visited many museums and historical homes, gone bowling, curling, kayaking at Hopkinton State Park, snowshoeing at Chestnut Hill Farm, bicycling or walking on many rail trails, on winter sleigh rides and on ropes courses; visited Old Sturbridge Village, several of the Boston Harbor Islands, and taken tours of Boston, as well as enjoying an uncountable number of lunches.
At the party, State Representative Kate Donaghue presented a Citation from the State House of Representatives to Mary Ann in recognition of her outstanding leadership in organizing and leading the Trailblazers.
In 2017, the Southborough Senior Center was recognized by the National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers with a Programs of Excellence Award for the Trailblazer Program. It was one of sixteen programs honored with this award for innovative, creative, and replicable programs for older adults. Since then, the Trailblazers program has been emulated at other Senior Centers in Massachusetts.
Group organizers hold a monthly meeting to plan activities at on the first Wednesday of every month, 3:00 pm at the Senior Center. Any seniors interested in learning more are welcome to drop in to join them.
