Virtual Author Talks this fall

The ongoing series features an in-person "viewing party" next week for teens who are fans of Leigh Bardugo's YA "Grisha" fantasy books.

The Southborough Library is continuing to offer the virtual author talk series.

To make the most of the series, the library is also hosting another in-person viewing party next week. this one is for fans of the popular young adult author Leigh Bardugo.

The author series features 2-3 live events per month with:

bestselling, award-winning, and highly acclaimed authors from around the world. The featured writers and thought leaders will cover a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres.

When you register to join the live zoom, you can also pre-submit questions for the Q&A.

As with all library events, participation is free to the public. Anyone can take advantage of the opportunity, but registration is required for the live talks.

If you can’t make the live events, the library’s subscription allows patrons to view the recordings later. Each talk is added to the existing library of streaming videos available through the library’s website. 

Here’s what’s on tap for the next few months:

Stories of Inspiring Latinas & LatinosNuestra América: Stories of 30 Inspiring Latinas/Latinos Who Have Shaped the United States with Smithsonian Educators
Thursday, October 2nd at 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Smithsonian professionals will discuss Nuestra América, a book that highlights the stories of Latinos’ ” incredible contributions to the cultural, social, and political character of the United States”.

Leigh Bardugo talk10 Years of Daring Heists and Lovable Outcasts in YA Fantasy with Leigh Bardugo
Thursday, October 9th at 7:00 – 8:00 pm

The bestselling author of the young adult fantasy fiction novels (inspiring the Shadow & Bone series on Netflix) will talk about her book Six of Crows, set in the “Grisha” universe.

Malala talk flyerFinding My Way with Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai
Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:00 – 8:00 pm

The author’s teenage autobiography (I Am Malala) about her courageous girlhood stand against the Taliban for her right to be educated made her a worldwide symbol. Now in her late twenties, she is about to release a new memoir, Finding My Way, about “trying to stay true to yourself when everyone wants to tell you who you are”.

Philippa Gregory talkCourtly Intrigue and Whispers as Weapons with Historical Fiction Queen Philippa Gregory
Wednesday, October 29th at 2:00 – 3:00 pm

The “queen of British historical fiction” will talk about her latest novel set in the Tudor Court, Boleyn Traitorfrom the perspective of Anne Boleyn’s sister-in-law Jane.

Community, Power, and the Search for Indigenous Identity with Award-Winning Journalist Joseph Lee
Wednesday, November 5th at 2:00 – 3:00 pm

Lee will discuss his memoir, Nothing More of This Land, about exploring his Indigenous identity as Aquinnah Wampanoag and the impact of the tribe’s home, Martha’s Vineyard, becoming an iconic vacationing spot for the wealthy.

The Search for Truth and the Persistence of Love Across Time with Novelist Amanda Peters
Thursday, November 13th at 7:00 – 8:00 pm

Peters will discuss her “instant bestselling novel”, The Berry Pickers, influenced by her Mi’kmaq heritage, as well as her more recent short story collection, Waiting for the Long Night Moon

The self-help author of the bestsellers The Power of Habit and Smarter Faster Better, will discuss his latest book, Supercommunicators, focusing on how to communicate and connect with anyone at work, home.

Scheming Wives and High-Stakes Hilarity with Author Sue Hincenbergs
Tuesday, December 2nd at 2:00 – 3:00 pm

This event features a debut novelist. She’ll talk about The Retirement Plan, where three best friends scheme up a plot to collect on their husbands’ life insurance policies.

The Legacy of Julia Child’s Kitchen with Author and Smithsonian Curator Paula J. Johnson
Tuesday, December 9th at 2:00 – 3:00 pm

The historian will discuss her book Julia Child’s kitchen: the design, tools, stories, and legacy of an iconic space. The author will discuss the famous cookbook author and TV chef’s kitchen (which was recreated at the National Museum of American History) and her legacy.
