The week in sports

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

ARHS Football finally broke its losing streak on Friday night. The team’s 6-3 win over Grafton was its first this season. Prior to the win, the Titans were ranked #21 of 22 teams in Division 2.

The team may still have a shot at making the playoffs, but it’s a pretty long one. Not only would they need to move up five rankings, but also win both of the final two regular season games. For this Friday’s Homecoming game, they’re pitted against Shrewsbury, a higher ranked D1 team.

Boys Soccer tied with Leominster 1-1 last week, followed by a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury. Their record is now 4-4-6. The Titans are ranked #34 for D1.

Girls Soccer started the week losing to Nashoba 2-1 and ended with the same result against Hopkinton. In between, they added one more tie, a 0-0 game with Shrewsbury 0-0. They currently stand at 1-8-5 and are still ranked #27 for D1.

Girls Volleyball added two more wins, 3-2 over Nashoba and 3-0 over Medway, before losing to 1-2 to Groton-Dunstable last week. They now stand at 4-13, and ranked #32 for D1. They’ll need to maintain that rank to qualify for playoffs.

Field Hockey tied 0-0 with Shrewsbury and 1-1 with Medway. That updates their record to 7-5-4. They are still ranked #17 for D1.

The Telegram posted the Cross Country home meets last week as Titans wins. The Boys won 22-39 and the Girls 17-42.1 They are listed as now standing at 3-1 for the season.

ARHS Boys Golf’s season is over. One Titan, Zach Dreyer, competed in the Central Mass Division 1 sectionals last week as an individual. Dreyer tied for 34 place out of 87 golfers. Unfortunately, the team didn’t qualify to compete in that tourney, let alone in this week’s state championships.

Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week2:

  1. ARHS Athletics’ schedule lists the Boys as losing. But the school’s record keeping is incomplete for the Cross Country meets this season (including missing the Girls results for this week), and the Worcester paper proved out to be the more accurate record keeper when there were discrepancies with Athletic’s results for Golf earlier this season.
