Obituary: Gary I. Schofield, 72

Gary I. Schofield, formerly of Southborough and Wayland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 18, 2025 while travelling with his wife Stephenie.

Gary grew up in Wayland on his grandparents’ dairy farm, which is now the site of Wayland High School. He attended Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island; Clarkson College and Boston College. He was drafted in 1972 in the 9th round of the NHL draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Gary thought he would enjoy a career as a professional hockey player but the Vietnam War intervened. He had a low draft number and so enlisted in the US Army Reserves where he served for 6 years.

In 1977 he started Schofield Land Clearing Co. which became Timber Harvesters Equip. Corp. Gary cleared land for building construction and sold firewood until he retired 40 years later. He resided in Southborough, Mass for 44 years and then moved permanently to his summer home in Gilford, New Hampshire.

Gary was an adventurer. For several years he raced a dirt modified race car at Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York. He also enjoyed scuba diving, lobster fishing, country-western dancing and riding one of his several motorcycles with Stephanie.

Gary was predeceased by his father Arthur Schofield. He is survived by his loving wife Stephanie, son Arthur, daughter-in-law Amanda and new granddaughter Adalynn. He is also survived by his mother Shirley, three brothers Dwight, Frank (Maura) and David (Beth), four sisters Susan Wright (Tom), Beth Schofield, Melanie Harvey (Bobby) and Lauri Filar (Alan), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary was a force of nature, was adored by his large family and will be greatly missed. He will leave a hole in our hearts that will never be filled!
