Heritage Chorale is returning to St. Mark’s School’s stage to kick off its 89th season a week from Sunday,.
The singers will perform, “Mozart’s Requiem”. On Facebook, the group promoted:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756-1791) last (unfinished work), the Requiem in D minor, is famous for its storied and complicated history, Mozart’s premonitions of his own mortality as he wrote it, and it’s musical power and beauty.
The version we are performing was revised and completed by Robert D. Levin, musicologist, who wrote, “Mozart’s unfinished Requiem presents a breathtaking tableau of Baroque and Classical style. The present completion seeks a stylistically idiomatic restoration that fully respects its 200-year history. All of the changes seek to emphasize the spiritual and dramatic power of Mozart’s fragment by placing it in a more focused light. As inadequate as such attempts must be, it is hoped that it will serve Mozart’s spirit while honoring his craftsmanship.”
As for the upcoming concert, a representative for the chorale detailed:
The first half of the concert will feature selections from [Handel’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day], a joyous celebration of the patron saint of music. Then following a brief intermission, the Chorale, four professional soloists, and orchestra will perform Mozart’s Requiem.
The concert will will take place on Sunday, November 23rd a 4:00 pm. It will be held at St. Mark’s School’s Putnam Family Arts Center. (See campus map here.)
The Chorale’s announcement noted that the venue is beautiful, with comfortable seating and “fabulous” acoustics.
