Southborough Recreation and the Southborough Police Department are offering free fun and “community connection” with kids in grades 5 to 8. The events will use “Hoops” to draw kids in.

The announcements posted on Facebook today promotes:

Winter Hoops flyerJoin us on Friday nights in January for an evening of basketball, fun, and community connection. . .

This is a great opportunity to learn more about your community’s police department, make new connections, and get in some extra reps on the court.

The co-ed events are split by grades 5–6 and 7–8, with two nights for each group. The event page invites players to sign up for one or both.

Prior to shooting hoops, the kids will meet with “police officers and command staff for a brief Q&A session” at the Public Safety Building. Afterwards, they’ll walk over to Woodward School’s gym for open play and “friendly pickup games”.

Registration is required. The Winter Hoops program will be held 7:00 – 9:00 pm on the following Fridays:

Grades 5–6: January 9 & January 23
Grades 7–8: January 16 & January 30

It’s won’t be the first time the SPD has uses basketball to connect with students this school year. Just last week, the SPD took part in the Boros Ballers event, playing against Algonquin Unified Basketball. See pics in the Facebook post below:

According to SPD Chief Ryan Newell, players on the N-S public safety team for the 2nd annual fundraiser were mainly from SPD staff (Lieutenant Sean McCarthy, Sergeant Steve Neivert, School Resource Officer Brian Collins, Detective Anthony Vega, and Officer Luke Soccorso, plus Public Safety Dispatcher Marlo Taylor & her husband) along with two Northborough officers.

You can check out more photos from the event on photographer Jeff Slovin’s website here.
