ARHS alerts parents to “bias-related incident” being investigated

This afternoon, Algonquin students and parents received a “Notice about a recent bias-related incident”. The message informed them of an incident being investigated by the school, after students made them aware of “an image” circulating.

Here is the message from Principal Sean Bevan:

Dear ARHS students and families,

On Monday, the administrative team and I were made aware that an image – taken last winter – specifically targeted some of our students using racist and antisemitic language and was newly circulating among some students.

I would like to thank the students who brought this concern to our attention, prompting an immediate investigation. While that work is ongoing, we are confident in our investigative process and protocols and will take appropriate action based on our findings. As part of this process, we have notified the Northborough Police Department.

The content of the image is unacceptable, harmful, and wholly inconsistent with the values of Algonquin Regional High School. We are actively supporting each of the students affected by this incident: our counseling and administrative teams are available to meet with students, answer questions, and provide a safe and supportive space for conversation.

This incident underscores the ongoing work our students and staff undertake each day to confront hate, challenge harmful language, and reflect together on how we can improve as individuals and as a school. Specifically, this week we began our first series of student-led anti-bias workshops (Changemakers for Good) in tenth-grade classes. This program, which starts in middle school and continues into high school, supports students in developing leadership skills by promoting respect, inclusion, and healthy peer relationships. The overarching goal of this work is to cultivate a stronger, safer, and more supportive school community. While the program may not be a panacea for hate speech, the workshops are emblematic of our commitment to engaging in important civic and community conversations, even if they are messy and difficult.

Our priority remains to ensure that all students feel safe, respected, and included. We will continue to address any behavior that undermines that commitment, and we encourage students to seek help whenever they encounter or witness something concerning.

If you have questions or believe your child may need additional support, please reach out to me or any member of the administrative or counseling teams.

Sincerely,
Sean Bevan
Principal
