The week in sports

Here are my highlights from Algonquin varsity sports competitions last week and the schedule for this week.

ARHS Swim teams continued to perform well, winning both of last week’s meets by wide margins. The Girls beat Shrewsbury 123-58 and Tantasqua 114-65. The Boys beat Shrewsbury 113-63 and Tantasqua 102-74.

ARHS Girls Hockey is now 4-0 after racking up three more wins within the past week. They beat Canton (3-1), Grafton (3-2), and Acton-Boxborough (9-3). They are scheduled to hit the ice again this Saturday, against Shrewsbury, in Westborough.

Boys Hockey hasn’t done as well. They lost their second game of the season to Marlborough 4-1. But they rebounded on Saturday to shut out Westborough 3-0

Photographer Jeff Slovin posted action shots from one of their games. Unfortunately, it was of the loss:

The Boys will head to Methuen for a tournament this Saturday and Sunday.

ARHS Girls Basketball is also playing in a weekend tournament. They’ll be hoping to get back on track after losing their last two games. The Titans lost to Wachusett last week (33-68) and Natick last night (29-80).

Last night also saw the defeat of ARHS Boys Basketball, ending their three game winning streak. The Titans lost 61-69 to Boston College High. Last week, they beat Wachusett (74-56) and Doherty (68-66).

Slovin posted pics from the Wachusett game:

Unfortunately the Titans lost to Shrewsbury 132.8-131.1.

On Saturday, the team traveled to a four school meet. They came in 3rd place with a score of 125, losing to Acton-Boxborough (134) and North Middlesex (132), but beating out Concord-Carlisle (113).

ARHS Wrestling lost to Quabbin at last Wednesday’s meet, but it was a close one, 40-42, with seven Titans winning their matches. On Saturday, the team ranked #12 out of 21 schools competing in a tournament at Marlborough.

In Indoor Track, there were no results posted for the first Central Mass meet of the season. However, in searching for it, I found that the teams competed in special events this month that aren’t posted on ARHS Athletics’ schedule.

Several members performed well at the MSTCA (Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association) Winter Festival on December 13th in Boston and at the Speed Classic this past Saturday. (Click on the prior links to see the detailed results.)

The schedule also doesn’t show either team attending the MSTCA’s Boston Holiday Challenge this Saturday. But based on past years, I’d say there is a good chance they will. And the Boys team’s page indicates they will be competing in a special Sunday event. . .

Here is the schedule for the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week1:
