Above: A road improvement project in a neighboring town will mean temporary detours onto roads in Southborough. (contributed map)
As part of the big overhaul project for the 495 & MassPike Interchange, MassDOT plans temporary closures of a roadway west of the Southborough & Westborough border that may impact travel routes for some residents.
It will also create detours directing cars onto Rte 9 in Southborough that may increase evening traffic on our side of the border, just after rush hour.
MassDOT shared the news with the Town, and the Town Clerk shared it with me to help forewarn readers.
The temporary closings of a section of Flanders Road are set for Wednesday through Friday. Closures are planned from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am on January 21 through the morning of January 24th. For a better look at the detour map, click on the image right.
Below is are excerpts from the message from a contracted Community Engagement Director on behalf of MassDOT:
I am writing to share an update regarding upcoming work for MassDOT’s I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project. MassDOT will temporarily close Flanders Road in Westborough from Washington Street to Connector Road on the evenings of January 21, 22 and 23. It will be in place from 6 PM each night until 6 AM the following morning. The closure is necessary for crews to demolish a section of the I-495 Northbound bridge over Flanders Road. A detour and signage will be in place to help drivers navigate the closure. A detour map is attached for reference; this will be posted on the project website soon. . .
We encourage you to share the announcement with your communities. We will also post updates to our project website.
