I can’t fix Pats fans’ broken hearts over last night’s Super Bowl loss. But I can offer some good news about Algonquin athletes. (Including, one famous alum.)
ARHS Class of 2013 graduate, and Southborough native, Korey Dropkin made history this weekend as half of the Team USA Mixed Doubles Curling Team. Team Cory and Korey were the first US team to qualify for the Olympic playoffs. It hasn’t been completely smooth sailing. The team lost a few of their matches, earned the right to play in this afternoon’s semi-finals.
Unfortunately, to advance, they’ll have to beat the same Italian team they lost to several hours earlier. Whatever happens, today, Dropkin’s giving his hometown reason to be proud and making some lasting memories – like the one below:

Algonquin Girls and Boys Swim Teams each finished 4th place at the West/Central Swimming & Diving Championships on Sunday.
The Boys’ Maxwell Qi won the Boys 100 Yard Breaststroke, Jonathan Ribeiro finished 3rd for the 200 Yard Freestyle, and Simon Linden tied for 4th in the 50 Yard Freestyle. For the Girls, Mina Chung finished 2nd in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and Alexandra Sidhom scored 4th in the 1 Meter Diving competition. And each team came in 2nd place for the 200 Yard Medley Relay. (You can find the full results here and T&G’s coverage here.)
The teams will compete in the State Championships this weekend at MIT.
Boys & Girls Indoor Track & Field will compete in the took part in the State Division 2 Indoor Track & Field Championship this Wednesday.
Last week, they teams participated in a regular midweek Mid-Wach meet. Then, on Saturday, the both teams competed in the Mid-Wach Division A League Meet. Highlights included Girls’ Hadley Anglim’s third place finish for the 55 meter Hurdles 33″.
Both teams came in 6th place out of 6 Division schools. That may be because of the number of team members who instead competed in the MSTCA Qualifier Meet that day.
The Boys team’s MSTCA highlights included Jakob Rochefort’s 300 Meters win and Clark Bezzant’s 2nd place finish for the 2 Miles. For the Girls, the 4×400 Relay team won their Finals, Jillian Belniak finished 2nd for the 55 meter Hurdles 33″, and Niamh OSullivan finished 4th place for the High Jump.
This coming weekend, some team members may also compete in the GBTCA Valentine Invitational, and GBTCA Calvin Davis Classic at the Reggie Lews Center. You can find more details on the upcoming competitions (and recent results) here.
The MidWach League Championships for Gymnastics were on Friday. I don’t know how Algonquin finished, but they didn’t make the top three. (The Telegram covered Westborough’s victory here and photo highlights here.)
Most of ARHS teams are still competing for good slots in winter post-season playoff brackets.
Girls Basketball won all of last week’s games. Their record improved to 10-7 after beating Nashoba (46-33), Andover (46-31), and Grafton. A story in the Community Advocate about Friday’s emotional game against Grafton sheds some light on one factor in the team’s uneven season. The CA wrote about:
Ashlee Dameri, an Algonquin senior and co-captain who had been an instrumental member of the girls’ basketball team before suffering a season-ending injury midway through the year.
The feelgood story focused on the emotions of Dameri’s temporary return to the court on Senior Night. Shortly after tip-off, Dameri scored the team’s opening basket:
The game was stopped afterward to recognize Dameri.
“It definitely meant a lot. I love having fun with my friends, playing here,” Dameri told the Community Advocate. “It hit me all at once — that was our last time being on the court together. It was really sad, but a sentimental moment.”. . .
After that touching moment, the Titans took care of business against Grafton. On a night that was all about honoring the seniors, Algonquin earned a convincing 69-41 win. (read more)
The Power Rankings, which came out earlier in the day, shifted the girls down for the second straight week. They’re now #23 for Division 1. (You can check out Senior Night photos for Girls Basketball and Cheer here.)
Boys Basketball is hopefully on an upward journey. The team shot up from 32 to 24 for D1, the second straight week of improvement. That predates the 5th win in their current five game streak.
Last week’s wins were over Fitchburg (68-26), Lincoln-Sudbury @ Lincoln-Sudbury (56-51), and Grafton (62-52). Photographer Jeff Slovin captured the joy at their Fitchburg win, the one that ” punched their ticket to the playoffs”.

In Ice Hockey, the Boys lost both of last week’s games 1-4 to Wachusett and Westfield. The team was back at #25 in the D2 rankings after a temporary improvement. Saturday was the Boys’ Senior Night. You can check out those pics here.
Happily, the Girls are is still dominating the ice. The co-op team is now 16-0 after their latest wins over Natick (5-1) and Westford Academy (4-1). They are outranked by one D1 team. Notre Dame only has a 11-1-3 record, but is credited as having faced much higher rated opponents.
Boys Wrestling continued to have a disappointing season. The team lost meets against Tyngsborough and Marlborough last week. (Results from a multi-school competition on Saturday at Agawam aren’t yet posted.) Regular competitions end this Wednesday, and the Titans don’t have anything on their schedule for this week. (Stay tuned to learn if any of their Wrestlers earned their way into post-season competitions.)
Now, here are the ARHS varsity games on tap for this week1:
