Over the weekend, the Southborough Police Department issued a press release identifying the deceased driver in a fatal car crash that took place early Friday morning. They also asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Southborough’s Police Detective.
The press release indicates that Crystal Johnson Clementi of Leominster was killed by a head-on car crash on Route 9 (a divided highway) with a driver travelling in the opposite direction. I reached out for clarity and was informed by the police chief that Clementi wasn’t “the wrong way driver”.
As of the press release, the collision was still under investigation and the other driver was still in the hospital. There is no information yet on whether any charges will be filed against her.
On Friday, the SPD issued a press release that stated that a 2 vehicle car crash resulted in one fatality. The other driver, described as a 23-year-old woman from Bolton, was transported to the hospital “with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.”
The SPD’s press release on Saturday afternoon updated:
The driver who died as a result of yesterday’s crash on Turnpike Road in Southborough has been identified as Crystal Johnson Clementi, 37, of Leominster, MA. Preliminary evidence gathered from the scene of the crash is consistent with a head-on collision involving a second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on Turnpike Road. The driver of this vehicle is still currently in the hospital. Investigators are currently gathering evidence, conducting interviews, and pursuing leads. The crash remains an active investigation involving the Southborough Police Department, Central Mass Law Enforcement Council (CMLEC), and the Worcester County DA’s Office.
Our thoughts are with Crystal’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. We understand how deeply this tragedy has affected the community, and we ask for continued patience and compassion as the investigation moves forward.
Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Detective Owen O’Brien at (508) 485-2121 or oobrien@southboroughma.gov.
Thank you.
