The regular varsity winter sports season is done. This week, four Algonquin teams, plus other Titans athletes, will be competing in State brackets or championships.
In Boy’s Basketball, the regular season ended on a sour note for the Titans last week with St. John’s breaking their 8 game winning streak. (As you can see from photographer Jeff Slovin’s Instagram post, they didn’t go down without a fight.)

The Titans still maintained their #25 rank for the Division 1 playoffs.
Tomorrow night, they’ll host a prelim round game against #40 Boston Latin at 6:00 pm. If they win, they’ll travel to play #8 Malden Catholic in the Round of 32. (That schedule is TBA.)
Girls Basketball will hope to improve this week as they enter the tourneys. Gonk lost both of last week’s games, updating their record to 10-10. They are ranked #23 for D1.
On Thursday, they’ll go up against #10 Billerica Memorial in the Round of 32. That’s February 26th at 7:00 pm in Billerica.
Boys Hockey is also #23 in their tournament. The Division 2 Titans will be playing in the Round of 32 this Wednesday, February 25th at 5:30 pm at Foxboro Ice Arena.
The game is a rematch against #10 King Philip Regional, a team that shut the Titans out 0-6 in the Methuen Tournament over Christmas break. But the Boys may have better odds than their rank and 8-9-3 record suggests. They ended the season stronger than they had been, with three shutouts and a 2-2 tie.
Last Monday, I posted that Girls Hockey finished the regular season undefeated. That was an error (based on an erroneous tweet by Hudson Athletics.) I should have noticed from the schedule I had a the bottom of the post that the team had one game left last week. Bishop Feehan broke the Titans’ 20 game winning streak.
Still, the Titans kept their #3 rank in the D1 bracket. And they’ll certainly be favored to win their Round of 32 game against #30 Westford Academy this Thursday. That’s 8:10 pm at New England Sports Center on February 26th.
None of the state tournament game tickets are posted yet, but they will be sold via GoFan.co here.
If any of those teams advance to the next round in another game scheduled to take place before next Monday, I’ll post a mid-week update.
In non-bracketed championship news. . .
Five members of the ARHS Ski Teams will compete in this week’s Alpine Ski State Championships. For Boys, sophomore Tommy Barna finished first place overall in the League. He’ll be joined by seniors Reilly Silvia and Dylan Steele to compete in the Boys State Championships. For the Girls Championship, Senior Cara Leonard and sophomore Jane Campbell will compete.
This week’s weather has caused the event to be rescheduled and relocated. It will now be held Wednesday, February 25th at Wachusett Mountain. I assume it will follow the same format, with races starting at 9:30 am.
Some members of the Girls Indoor Track team competed at the State Indoor Track & Field Meet of Champions. The top finisher was Charlotte Lipka at #10 for the High Jump, followed by #11 Niamh O’Sullivan. The 4×400 Relay team also finished #11 and Tanvi Mehta #13 in the 600 Meters. (No one competed from the Boys team.)
