Post-Season Wrap-up

Girls Hockey's dramatic OT loss lower seed Methuen in Elite Eight

Algonquin’s last team standing in the tourneys suffered a heart-breaking fall last week.

#3 ARHS Girls Hockey entered the Division 1 Elite Eight against #6 Methuen as the seemingly stronger team, with 22 wins under their belts, and only one loss. MetroWest Daily News recaps the dramatic ending to their year:

Three days after surviving in double overtime, the Algonquin/Hudson girls hockey team walked into a locker room facing the same scenario. Tied 1-1 through 45 minutes of play. Confident, but nervous. Season on the line.

The end came quickly.

Going strong: Algonquin/Hudson girls hockey last unbeaten, untied team in state
One of the few shots to elude goalie Addy Cagan wasn’t targeted for the net. But sophomore Sarah Marano’s high wrister deflected off the glove of a defenseman and into the cage to give Methuen/Tewksbury a 2-1 OT victory Wednesday evening at Chelmsford Forum.

The paper tweeted video of the shocking moment:

It was the second straight year that the team was outplayed by underdogs in the tourneys. (At least this time, they got further into the playoffs.) Photographer Jeff Slovin posted photos from last week’s game, focusing on celebrating the Titans’ great season:

Now ARHS Athletics is turning its attention to spring sports. The school’s Athletics Night is tonight, and teams will soon be practicing.

Official competitions won’t start for more than two weeks. In the meantime, the first scrimmage on the books isn’t until Saturday, March 21st. (That’s Boys Lacrosse vs Bishop Hendricken, 9:30 am at home.) More teams will scrimmage the following week.

Girls Lacrosse and Boys Volleyball have scheduled the earliest season openers — on March 26th.
