In three weeks, graphic novelist Jonathon Todd will return to our area to teach kids about drawing cartoons, comic strips, or graphic novels.
This time, the event is organized by Northborough-Southborough Public School libraries. K-12 students can sign up to participate in one of three 1-hour workshops the afternoon/evening of Thursday, April 9th.
The event will be held in the library at Algonquin Regional High School, 79 Bartlett St, Northborough.
The first workshop is dedicated to students in grades K–2. Older students are asked to rank their preference for the other two workshops.
Following the first two workshops, students will be offered a “quiet space to continue work”. Plus, librarians will lead book making workshops “opposite the cartooning workshops”.
The deadline to register for Todd’s workshops is April 1st. But space is limited, so I’d sign interested kids up ASAP (here).
Below is an overview of the workshops:
Grades K-2
Cartoon Drawing (4:00 – 5:00 pm)
In this workshop, participants cover the basics on how to draw cartoon figures doing almost anything. (For this age group, parents must stay at the workshop with their kids.)
Grades 2+
Writing and Drawing Comic Strips (5:15 – 6:15 pm)
In this workshop, participants will get practice writing and drawing one, two, three, and four-panel cartoons
Create a Graphic Novel Page (6:30-7:30 pm)
In this workshop, Mr. Todd explains the elements of a story, panel planning, and penciling and inking a graphic novel

For those not familiar with Todd, he is an author/illustrator whose work is inspired by his own childhood experiences. He has experience working with kids (in Southborough and elsewhere) to help them tap into their own experiences and imagination to create cartoons/graphic novels.
For the past several years, the Southborough Library has brought Todd in to lead workshops for kids.
To learn about him and his work, check out his blog on tumbler, Cecil’s World.
This event is made possible by grants awarded by the Northborough and Southborough Cultural Arts Councils, funded through the Mass Cultural Council.
