It’s the time of year when Southborough starts divvying up plots in the Community Garden.
This week, the Town announced that registration is open for residents to reserve a plot in the garden on Breakneck Hill Conservation Land.
(Registration is for non-residents will open on March 30th.)
The Community Garden is a space where the community can grow their own veggies, herbs, or annual flowers.
Plots are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Residents can request up to two plots. Non-residents are restricted to one plot. The cost is $30 per plot (for the season).*
Some important rules for gardeners include:
- No pesticides are allowed, organic or otherwise.
- No soil or compost can be brought into the community gardens this season due to concerns about invasive jumping worms.
- Unattended watering is not permitted.
- Mint and other quickly spreading plants are strictly prohibited.
Since the rules are embedded inside the registration system which requires logging in or creating a new profile, I copied them to a pdf to make it easier for readers. You can read the full rules here.
It appears that registering requires using the Town’s online portal. You can find the link here. But the public can also email any questions to Conservation Assistant, Lara Davis at ldavis@southboroughma.com.
The website doesn’t post the cost, and the opportunity isn’t free. The registration portal states “You will be able to pay online using this portal, or you may pay via a physical check in the Conservation Department located in the lower level at 9 Cordaville Road.”
*Dates weren’t posted for when the garden will open and close. I’ll update this post when I hear back on that detail.
